Matthew Barney: DRAWING RESTRAINT at SFMOMA

For all those in the Bay Area, SFMOMA will be exhibiting Matthew Barney's work in an exhibition entitled Drawing Restraint. I have been a Barney fan since I was a graduate student and can say that his installations are as compelling as his film work. The Guggenheim Museum's restropective of the Cremaster series was absolutly superb. With any hope SFMOMA can pull off something as spectacular.

The show runs June 23 - September 17, 2006 and there is an artist talk on June 22 at 6:30 (think it may be sould out though)

Mikons! What a great idea

Mikons.com has got to be one of the better ideas I have seen in a while. It is essentially a shockwave app that lets a user create his/her own personalized icons. Hence "My icons". Since myspace and other such sites have been turning average web users into designers and developers I can see this idea really taking off. The idea of a bunch of untrained icon designers out there should make for some interesting results.

I also have to say that the UI at Mikons is top notch. Great feel, good flow and an overall great experience. Particularly like the speech bubble icon they use in the header. I work with speech bubbles a lot at my job at Eurekster and I have to say it is a unique look to this now common symbol.

Let's hear it for circles

Seems like a lot of sites these days are using monotone circle/bubble design elements (similar to my header). Two notable sites are Sphere and Umundo Is this new the rounded-corner-gradient-cross-hatch-web2.0 design trend? Hope so....been using this style for years. Great way to fill negative space and has very subtle yet elegant feel.
